Rare Chinese KingFisher Feather Flower Pendant with Coral Beads, Antique Late 18th Century Early 19th Century Asian Floral Dangling Design offered by TheJewelSeeker on 21 Vintage Street. It’s amazing to find the kingfisher feather designs, and even more rare and hard to find them in decent condition. This gilt silver pendant is in good Antique condition with some of the feathers missing (please review pictures carefully) which is consistent with age when compared to the very few other similar pieces. The pendant has beautiful old natural coral round ball beads which all seem to be in place (none missing). It’s an highly collectible piece and we have the matching bracelet listing in another listing on our site. The hanging basket part of the pendant has a dangling teardrop shaped bead below that is also accented with the cluster of coral beas and accents of the Kingfisher “enamel” style applied feathers. We have added a description from Wikipedia, describing the application of Tian-Tsui”, which is the art of this ancient Chinese art with Kingfisher feathers. Great opportunity to pick up this rare, hard to find wonderful piece of Asian Art most often found in Art Museums.
This pendant was found, along with the matching bracelet in an estate in Eugene, Oregon, where there were many Chinese and Asian Artifacts.
Color: Blue and Gold
Condition: Very Good. We have not attempted to clean this piece, but leaving it in the original condition that it was found in. We are leaving the chain on the pendant, but it is not included in the price of the item, and not original to the piece. It is also not from the same era – it was on the pendant when we found it. We are leaving it on, because it is part of the history of this piece – the chain is probably 1949s 1859s era, This is a pre-owned item and contains normal wear considering the age of the piece. It is a collectors item, not expected to be in perfect condition by all antique standards.

According to Wikipedia: “Tian-tsui (traditional: 點翠, simplified: 点翠, pinyin: diǎncuì, “dotting with kingfishers”) is a style of Chinese art featuring kingfisher feathers. For 2,000 years, the Chinese have been using the iridescent blue feathers of kingfisher birds as an inlay for fine art objects and adornment, from hairpins, headdresses, and fans to panels and screens. While Western art collectors have focused on other areas of Chinese art including porcelain, lacquer ware, sculpture, cloisonné, silk and paintings, kingfisher art is relatively unknown outside of China. Kingfisher feathers are painstakingly cut and glued onto gilt silver. The effect is like cloisonné, but no enamel was able to rival the electric blue color. Blue is the traditional favorite color in China. As with most iridescent, electrifying colors in animals such as morpho butterfly wings, the intense color in bird feathers comes not from pigments in the feather itself, but from the way light is bent and reflected back out, much like a prism breaks white light into its spectrum of rainbow colors. These microscopic structures in feathers are called photonic crystals.”
